| Galicia - The Ancient Walls Of Lugo |
|
In the province of Galicia, in north-western Spain, lies the capital of Lugo, and the ancient Roman Walls of Lugo. Built in the third century A.D., these fortress walls have stood intact for over 1700 years. Lugo was originally an old Celtic town which had existed for hundreds of years before the Romans founded it around 15 B.C., during the time of Emperoror Augustus. At the time, Lugo served as an administrative outpost, and because of it's key location, quickly and rapidly became one of the key towns during the times when the Romans occupied the region. The Walls of Lugo were built originally to protect the Roman town of "Lucus". The walls surround the entire city, and the entire circuit remains whole, demonstrating one of the finest examples of late Roman fortifications in western Europe. Today, you can still see the walls, and when you visit Lugo, situated on the Miņo River, 90km southeast of La Coruņa, you can witness part of the history of the great Roman Empire, whose reach extended far throughout Wester Europe. Most of Lugo has developed beyond the walls now, but there are still old monuments within the city including a cathedral, which was built originally in the 12th century as a Romanesque structure and then later modified by various additions, restorations, and cloisters dating from the early 18th century. You can also see some of the hot mineral baths in the vicinity. Certainly there is much to see in Galicia, but do not forget to visit Lugo, and its great Roman walls. But even if you don't get a chance to see the walls this time, they'll probably still be around when you're ready to visit again.
